THE DAILY DROP-IN ……… (aka Wookie’s Speakeasy!) Pt. 2

Wow…I cannot believe we are in March already! Where on earth has the time gone.
Anyway, what have we been doing…..uh hang on, I need coffee and a bite to eat –
*wandering over to the kitchen and grabbing ☕️ and 🥐 then back to the comfy chair*
Ah that’s better. So ladies this is what went on in our world…
In January Shannon flew over to England to spend some weeks with me before we both flew back to the States so I could spend time there with her.
It was totally awesome. The experience also brought up some interesting points from our different perspectives.
Shannon loved England. One passion of hers is history and the fact my country has historical references dating back over 2000 years completely bowls her over! On the visit to Bath I thought we were going to walk in every footstep ever walked by a Roman! I’m pleased to say we did not have to recite every play written by the Bard although she was the judge in deciding who acted the best dramatic scene as Julius Caesar turned to face Brutus crying “Et tu Brute..” – yes I was one of the J.C’s…😈.
However these were 5 points Shannon finds intriguing, amazing, weird, strange or just odd…
1. Our roads – they were an endless source of incredulity and bewilderment. ‘They were too narrow’ was the verdict!… Utahns would not be able to drive down them; they were too bendy, no straight roads anywhere, and my favourite comment of all “ This is a two way road? You have got to be kidding me! I can’t get my truck down here, let alone two cars passing!” Said in an unusually raised voice! 🤣. I would like to state that I took some great photos of beautiful scenery and people we were with. Shannon’s photos include a comprehensive view of all the roads she found strange!! …Hmmm no comment I think! 🤣😈
2. Our 24 hour opening supermarkets – actually don’t open for 24 hours 7 days a week. They close at 22:00 hrs on Saturday and reopen anything from 06:00 hours on Monday. They are open on a Sunday but within the Sunday trading laws – 10:00-16:00 hrs approx.!
3. Fresh food is so much cheaper than the States. I would agree on that one!
4. Our food in general is way less salty and has one heck of a lot less sugar content. She has even contacted one company to question why their product, available in both countries, has differing sugar values. She is waiting for a reply.
5. Our meals are pretty much ‘what they say on the tin’. What you order is exactly what you get without lots of extras. I didn’t understand this until I got to the States.

It was my turn to visit Shannon’s America. I have been to Florida twice and loved every screaming, white-knuckled ride and villa stay immensely. However this time I was going to experience America properly.
OMG it was incredible! So very different to visiting and living like a tourist. What struck me was just how new everything looks. I appreciate there were no historical buildings as I would know but all the buildings looked as though they were only 2-3 decades old. It’s possible its down to the totally different climate but we are still not sure. If anyone knows why, please do drop us a comment. I was very conscious of a different culture. Words or phrases used in our everyday language could sometimes have a different meaning to an American. Just as I was also learning to speak Americanese! 😂I’m almost fluent now!
My 5 points that I found amazing, intriguing, weird, strange and downright odd…
1. Your milkshakes.. I was surprised not to see banana as a flavour option. However my biggest surprise was to get the milkshake …plus the container it was made in with the remains of what they couldn’t get in the glass… plus a glass of water as well as the drink was sometimes very sweet! Now either our companies need to take the American way or the Americans just buy bigger glasses? I don’t know..what do you think?
2. Sugar…. Wow , this has to be an ingredient in just about everything I tasted. My first few meals were like total sugar rushes! Plus I rapidly learned if something was going to be sweet in the first place , be prepared for extra forms of sweetness to be added like cream or icing sugar or honey etc.
3. All meals are bigger… It didn’t seem to matter what I ordered, I got either a stacked plate or two separate plates both with sizeable portions on them. Also the meals are bigger because most things have not just one ingredient but up to 3, 4 or 5 extra bits tacked on. Wanting to try the French toast I couldn’t believe how sweet it was or that it came with sausages and your version of bacon – which is not our back bacon!- I found every meal to be an amazing experience. Awesome!
4. Talking of big… it was strange how you can talk of an 8 hour road trip without batting an eyelid. That would take me up to Scotland pretty much. I became very aware of just how huge the States is. Yes you can see a map but until you’re there it doesn’t hit home. On the flight I was flying over desert for hours it seemed. Plus your climate changes. One morning I was sunbathing in tee shirt, shorts, shades and Havaianas, by the afternoon I was in a snow storm!
5. Your political setup – I am not a political aficionado however I cannot wrap my head around how it works. I don’t understand how people can be career senators or congress. I was looking at the age of some senators ..over a quarter of them are waaaay past retirement age. Plus how laws are made and the process it follows. Then you have to register and state your party if you want to vote in the primaries – but you don’t have to actually vote for your party!. In fairness I wanted to try to understand how the American system worked because it is so different to ours but I’m still struggling with it. Any volunteers to try and explain it?..

These were some of the things that caught our attention. I know we both had an absolute whale of a time and Im looking to return again very soon.
So has anyone else got any things that you find strange, weird, fascinating etc about either of our countries? You don’t have to have visited, it could be something you read or saw. Drop a comment if you have. We would love to hear from you ladies..😊

  1. One thing I find fascinating is y’all can have basically anything delivered! I find this especially true with the Tesco grocery shopping delivery. I mean I would never go to a dang grocery store again!

      1. Great post Wooks! Very interesting to see the differences.
So first….supermarket shopping…..*shudder* …has ta be THE most mind numblingly boring chore in existence. Not to mention havin ta navigate the trolley around shoppers who just CAN’T decide what colour apples they want…..so yeah!!!! GET IT DELIVERED!!!
Bendy roads…well of course they need ta be bendy! How else are we supposed ta get round the corners!…😂
In my neck of the woods the roads are indeed very very narrow…..I think its ta make sure the cows don’t wander off when they’re bein shifted to another field….oh! …..and also so the tractors (the bane of my life!) can ANNOY ME when I’m in a hurry and can’t get past them….
Annnnnd whaddya mean no banana flavoured milkshakes? Whats that all about?..😂

        1. Tractors annoying???? I dont understand what you mean Em😂. And I did not think our road was so narrow but yesterday the lady who delivered our oat seed could not squeeze her truck into it and i had to go a kilometer with the tractor and pick the sacks up where the road was broader. So the roads are a bit narrow here too i guess or its just the trucks are getting bigger…🙄
          Lol agree about shopping…

          1. Dunno bout the trucks gettin bigger Robin….but the tractors DEFINITELY are!!
I SWEAR the local farmers wait until I’m running late for something…..which, OK is pretty often…and then they decide to go out and about in the tractor!..

          2. Lol Em! Its more annoying with all that cars honking and beeping behind the tractor i think!😂😂Seriously i dont get that much. Im a GOOD farmer who always let cars pass when its possible. 😉(I promise i do !(puss in boots face) ) You must have a lot of bratty farmers at your place😂. Freja also claims to have those mean farmers that tries to block the road to her work…🙄

        2. EM why are the Irish farmers letting the cows on the road… that’s very dangerous right? Especially if you’re coming round the the next bend tex..uh I mean speak.. umm.. on handsfree of course .. ing to me ! 😈

          Liked by 2 people

          1. The farmers use the road to move the cows to another field……so like things are movin slowly cos cows dont move too fast if ya get my drift Wooks…so no danger there really…Its not as if ya could be doing oh I dunno…like 83 miles an hour or anythin…😈

            Liked by 1 person

          2. How true EM of course they move slowly, they’re cows and the farmer wouldn’t want to rush them! I get that there would be no danger from speeding since anyone worth their salt knows to slow down when coming round a bend and are therefore prepared ya see…however for the likes of people like yo…er people who constantly text when driving, tend to do it at slower speeds so happily cruise round the bends and curves whilst continuing to text…tsk! tsk! so dangerous! .😈😈📲

  2. Loved reading about you ladies experiences! It woke up my old wanderlust a little bit.☺ I love trying food of other cultures too. I havent been to uk since i was like 20 but i really liked it. I remember the houses were very cosy and the apartments were built with the rooms on top of each other instead of like here one apartment is on one storey only. ☺

  3. It was pretty awesome Robin and the different foods… well where do I start? ……. I tried s’mores.. yep finally had one of the famous snacks the day before I returned to the UK. RESULT- I didn’t have to eat anything sweet for about 3 days thanks! 🤣 wow those concoctions are sooooo sweet!

    1. I have a feeling my hair would stand straight up from all that sugar but i would love to try the foods of different parts of the US. I have travelled very little in America and ig would be nice to do sometime.

  4. Looking at the comments about tractors I’m seriously wondering is there a special code amongst tractor drivers Robin when driving on the highway to see how many cars they can slow down in one drive. Do they get points like 5 points per car and 10 points per 4×4 plus 1 point for each horn blast? Are these points sent off daily into like a league for tractor drivers? Obviously Robin this isn’t what you would do (why the heck not brat sister😈! I would like a shot!)🤣). What do you reckon EM? I’m convinced the Irish tractors do !

          1. Lol Shannon i do think you get extra points in my road because its John Deer tractors and i like those! 😁
I have very briefly visited only one US state and i recall the trucks were HUGE! Lol! They would never fit into Swedish parking places…But i had the impression that everything was very big in the states compared to Sweden or europe…. That is good when it comes to ice cream and foods i think. 😁

          2. “Ok y’all listen up y’hear cos I’m nut gonna say it agin!…That there big truck thang with them big wheels in the front, like a roadrunner but waaaay much slower…y’all with me so far? Well that dang big ‘un hits the highway and purdy much slows down to a turtle’s pace, y’all getting it now?….W’all now that means all of you mighty fine truckers out there w’all I guess you’m gonna hafta slow down some like real slow ya know what I mean…y’all magin that there turtle sloooooowly ambling by, slower than a tumbleweed drifting by in th’afternoon breeze takin all day justa cross that dang highway”……and there you have it, the best I can do Ma’am. I hope it helps! 😇

          3. Well first off I do not speak “southern” fluently so I may need a translator. I do however get the gist of what you are saying. You are telling me when the tractor hits the road it goes slower then molasses up hill in January and causes all the cars behind it to slow way down. America has solved that problem however with wide roads so cars can go around tractors.

          4. 😳 uh Ma’am….brushes?…No-one mentioned anything at all about brushes….you must have clicked over 2 pages of the blog or something. Best you go back and check, yes?…I’d give you a hand but well uh I guess I’m incredibly busy right now ..😱

          5. No worries Robin my truck is not that big. It could not flatten any tractors. As for mentioning brushes, Wookie, I am just making sure you are paying attention.😉

    1. Actually you get 10 points for horn blasts and 50 for each one finger salute!😂😂😂 Then you can buy a bigger tractor for all your points… ive heard 🙄… No not me ofcourse. im nicely driving my fathers old tiny tractor and only hindering people as a joke to cheer them up if theh look stressed…🙄

      1. See…. a caring tractor driver! You need to take note EM, not all tractor drivers are out to get you. You only need to go to Sweden,,,problem solved 🤣

Wow so that’s how the scoring works! I knew it, I knew there was a secret code! Thank Robin….now to go and explain the idea (yet again in American!) 😈

        Liked by 2 people

      2. The nice thing about the roads here in the USA is that they are wide enough that we don’t have to worry about getting stuck behind a tractor. 😉

  5. You guys her truck isn’t *that* big. 😝 I mean I commonly drive an SUV that is probably larger lol. Also as to tractors.. well that’s how we get traffic jams here. And ya know you can’t pass them unless its legal being stuck 20 cars deep behind tractors. 🙄 However, what we find annoying most is that they usually are so wide they have to drive so far to the right (which is the correct side to drive on 😆) that they destroy all the mail boxes with their discs and stuff! We usually have to replace the mailbox 2 or 3 times a year because of them!

    1. Logan in civilized populated areas of the USA you know not in the boondocks our roads are big enough to pass tractors.😉🤣😂As for my truck it is bigger then most SUVs but not as big as the big 250s.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Hey! We are civilized! But you just have to realize these tractors are so big you have to have a ladder to climb into them literally so the attachments are a lane and a half wide when folded up! I mean we live in a highway and it’s still like that! 😛 just out of curiosity why do you have a truck that is that big. 🧐🤔

        Liked by 2 people

    2. Wow Logan why does vehicles have to be so big!😂😂 Some people are actually gettting really big cars here to nowadays. I probably could park my car under one of them if the car park is full, lol. But even here tractors are getting bigger… I like smaller that wont pack the soil and damage it. And not the mailboxes lol, that must be annoying!

      Liked by 2 people

      1. Well Robin our vehicles are so big because we are all big! My bad and brother are both taller than me! Most small cars I couldn’t comfortably sit straight up in without hitting my head. 😳 And with more leg room we tend to
        Be less grouchy lol. 😉

        Liked by 1 person

          1. Lol I’m not sure why we are so tall really. I’m a good bit taller than my grandfather and grandmother on both sides of my family so me not know. It’s completely random! Ya know one advantage shorter people have though is… sometimes the shower head is to low to walk under 🙄.
